Kitting Your Princess Out for School

Guest Post* for your enjoyment….

While Kate and Wills have a long way to go until they need to worry about little George starting school, if you have a school age little Princess you need to start stocking up for the new school year now!

Avoid the rush and get everything bought in good time, so you can relax and enjoy the rest of the school summer holidays (or be run royally ragged by your brood!). Here’s what to pop on your shopping list:

School Shoes

Shoes are one of the most important new purchases to make at the start of a school year, as it’s crucial that children have well-fitting, comfortable and supportive shoes to allow their feet to grow and form properly. Don’t be tempted to try and make shoes last longer by buying them slightly too big or letting children squeeze into last year’s pairs – it’s fine to do that wilth all other items of school uniform, but shoes need special attention.

The good news is that a great pair of school shoes doesn’t have to cost a royal mint! Take a look at George’s range of girl’s school shoes for pairs from just £8, and treat your princess to supportive school shoes adorned with her choice of flowers, hearts, bows, buckles or stars.

Uniform

You’ll also find a full uniform shop at George at ASDA, with tiny supermarket prices on everything from packs of polo shirts to pinafore dresses. Why not choose pieces with an extra special touch, like cardigans with bow pockets or frill collar shirts, to let your princess stand out from the crowd? Just be sure to check with the school about uniform requirements before you buy!

PE Kit

A well stocked PE bag is essential, and plimsolls, t.shirt and shorts/PE skirt are likely to be needed for indoor activities. For outdoors, sturdier trainers will be required, as well as possibly a tracksuit for when the weather turns cooler. Some classes will also need a swimming kit – the school will let you know if this applies to you and, beware, it’s likely to be sensible one pieces only, with no frilly two pieces or Hello Kitty designs allowed!

Bags and Accessories

It’s nice to let your child choose her own school bag – perhaps something with a favourite character or pretty pattern? As well as a rucksack she may need a PE bag, a book bag (although many schools provide these) and a water bottle.

Stationary

We all remember the joys of stationary shopping for a new term. A character pencil case is usually an essential, as well as shiny new pens, pencils, erasers, ruler and coloured pencils. Older children will also need a calculator.

Coat

While the sun might be shining during the summer holidays, it’s unlikely to be the case for very long when the new school year starts in September. At the very least, a light, waterproof jacket will be needed, to keep off any unexpected showers.

Underwear

Don’t forget the basics! It’s often the case that when you need to find a pair of plain black or white socks for school, you’re faced with a drawer of gaudy colourful pairs! Top up their underwear drawers and abolish those early morning sock hunts.

Pick up everything on this list and you can pack your princess off to school fully kitted out and ready to rule this new school year.

All around the country the familiar morning routine has either just begun or is about to. You know what I’m talking about, the Back to School shuffle. In our house that constitutes me waking up way before either my daughter or husband to get coffee started, clothes readied and my teeth brushed (hair optional). Once they are both up, it’s the rush to the drop off line, making sure we remembered lunch, any money needed, forms signed, homework done and shoes tied. Most days I let my daughter pick out her own clothes the evening before (with minor changes by me before moring. Like, oh, no glittery skirts and tanks in say, WINTER). She may only be 6, but this girl, has some style. We are already battling over styles to wear (No Sofia, you may not wear makeup to 1st grade), but there’s one thing we both can love and agree on, Disney Princesses. This season, she is heading back to school with some of her favorite Disney Princess styles and I have found 6 collections with some of my favorite Disney Princesses.
